Portrait subjects frequently remain anonymous or go unrecognized, but the identities of some subjects can be recovered and reinterpreted over time. Looking at paintings by Diego Rivera and Albert Schindler, for example, we can discover the stories of Luz Jim\u00e9nez, a master weaver and Nahua historian who lived in the 20th-century in Mexico, and Emmanuel Rio, an enslaved Afro-Brazilian musician who was taken to Vienna around 1820. <\/p>
