Richly bejeweled and tattooed, with his horse's reins in one hand and a hookah mouthpiece in the other, Bhim Singh deftly projects an image of power combined with pleasure and comfort. The leashed cheetah and falcon seem to be merely part of the large entourage arrayed around the ruler, which also contains men bearing royal standards and insignia, including a black solar disk with a gold sun in the center, a symbol of the once-proud Sisodia clan of Mewar.

The magnificence of the scene belies the fact that Bhim Singh was actually a weak ruler in a succession of ineffectual leaders. Mewar had once been considered the strongest Rajput state because of its lengthy resistance to the Mughal emperors, but in 1818 Bhim Singh was forced to sign a treatey with the British, accepting their protection.

[105100
Ghasi
PC-7","PC-109","PC-831","PC-837
Arts of Asia","Art Institute Icons","Essentials","Arts of Asia 100
miniature painting","paper (fiber product)","painting (image making)","royal personages","South Asian","gold","watercolor","painting","asian art","tattoos","swords","smoking","men","jewelry","falcons","cheetahs","Indian (South Asian)","weapons","Rana","leopards","horses","animals
["TM-5377
TM-5344","TM-5377
South Asian","Indian (South Asian)
["TM-9","TM-26
TM-340","TM-9","TM-26
miniature painting","painting","asian art
TM-11484
TM-12757","TM-8884","TM-12797","TM-10121","TM-12623","TM-13453","TM-13452","TM-12304","TM-12385","TM-12386","TM-8804","TM-12218
TM-11484","TM-12757","TM-8884","TM-12797","TM-10121","TM-12623","TM-13453","TM-13452","TM-12304","TM-12385","TM-12386","TM-8804","TM-12218
royal personages","tattoos","swords","smoking","men","jewelry","falcons","cheetahs","weapons","Rana","leopards","horses","animals
TM-2982
TM-2452","TM-2403
TM-2982","TM-2452","TM-2403
paper (fiber product)","gold","watercolor
["TM-3891
painting (image making)
Art Institute Icons","Essentials","Arts of Asia 100
["1975.507
accession
Maharana Bhim Singh in Procession
["title
The `description` field in this response is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 Generic License (CC-By) and the Terms and Conditions of artic.edu.
